Translation is a tool of social and cultural change and development which contributes to the renewal of the forms and ways of exchange in the social, economic, political, intellectual and artistic field. Translating democratizes the access to knowledge and provides the opportunity for works of art, ideas and imaginations to travel widely. Translation also fertilises and enriches languages including new scientific and technical lexicon, human and social science concepts, and renewing imaginations and their way of representation.
The Anna Lindh Foundation in this context has supported over the last 2 years a promising study and a mapping programme on the “Current status of translation in the Mediterranean Region”. A study that entailed a significant work involving a great number of partner organizations, researchers, writers and translators, and which was compiled and coordinated by Transeuropeenes (France).
A rich document has been produced, documenting the journey and findings of the study, presenting major and important conclusions and recommendations, that would contribute in shifting policies in a current changing societies.
The study takes into account the entire chain of translation: writers, translators, publishers, booksellers, libraries, translation programmes, media and covers literary translation in its broadest sense, including part of the translation of human and social sciences as well as theatre and children’s literature. It also reviews the translation into several directions in the region: not only from north to south but also from south to north, from east to west and from west to east.
